Vision and Hearing Screenings

Vision and hearing screenings are essential health services that support student learning by identifying potential vision or hearing concerns that can affect educational performance. These screenings are required for all students enrolled in accredited Indiana schools, including those in virtual learning programs, and help ensure each child has the opportunity for academic success through early identification and appropriate follow-up care.

The State of Indiana mandates the following screenings for all students enrolled in schools accredited by the Indiana Department of Education. These requirements also apply to students participating in virtual education programs.

Vision Screening Requirements

School-administered vision screenings measure near and distant visual acuity to check how well a student sees at various distances. These screenings are required for students in the eighth grade and any new student that is suspected of having a visual impairment.

Hearing Screening Requirements

Hearing screenings are designed to detect possible hearing challenges that may impact communication and learning. Required hearing screenings will be conducted for students in the seventh and tenth grades. Any new student that is suspected of having an auditory impairment may also be screened.

Screening Procedure

Vision and hearing screenings will be conducted on designated days in correlation with the local schools. Guardians will be notified of the date and time in advance. Guardians have the right to request a vision or hearing screening if they believe their child may be suffering from a visual or auditory impairment.

*Guardians do have the right to decline vision and hearing screenings, and will be required to sign a form stating such if they choose not to participate.
