Attendance Policies

Students enrolled in the virtual learning program are expected to attend live classes, log in daily, and complete assigned coursework promptly. Consistent participation is essential for student success and is used to determine attendance.

Live Learners

Students scheduled for live instructional sessions are required to attend all scheduled sessions. Attendance is taken during these live classes, and failure to attend will be recorded as an absence unless properly reported and excused. Students must also have their cameras enabled for class attendance to count. Please report all non-functional Chromebook cameras to have them repaired.

Asynchronous Learners

Students participating asynchronously must demonstrate daily progress by logging in and engaging with coursework each school day. This includes completing assignments, participating in required activities, and maintaining consistent academic progress. Student activity and progress are monitored daily by Indiana Online Academy.

Reporting Absences

Indiana Online Academy reports student attendance and participation directly to Rushville Consolidated Schools. All absences must be reported to Indiana Online Academy using their official attendance form.

To report an absence, families must complete the Indiana Online Academy Attendance Notification Form, which requires the student’s name, date(s) of absence, and reason for the absence. Supporting documentation (such as a doctor’s note) may be uploaded with the form when applicable.

Absence Limits

To remain in good standing in the virtual learning program, students must adhere to the following attendance guidelines:

  • Students are allowed up to eight (8) excused absences per year.

  • After the eighth excused absence, a doctor’s note or other official documentation will be required for additional absences to be considered excused.

  • Five (5) unexcused absences will result in an in-person conference with the counselor and building administrators to establish an attendance contract.

Written notification will be sent to parents/guardians on the 4th, 8th, and 12th absences.

**If a student accumulates 10 consecutive or 18 cumulative absences, per Indiana Code 20-19-9-5, they are considered habitually truant and must be withdrawn from the Virtual Learning Experience**

Consequences for Habitual Truancy

When a student exceeds this 8-absence limit, an attendance contract will begin to avoid a more serious attendance problem. This attendance contract may include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Report to a designated location during RJSVS hours to ensure instructional time is consistent and uninterrupted.

  • Report to the BMV with recommendations for revocation of the student’s license (Applies only to High School Students)

If a student fails to comply with the contract, they may be reported to the Department of Child Services and/or Rush County Prosecutor’s Office.

If the parents or guardians and the student feel there are legitimate reasons for extending the number of absences beyond eight, they may appeal to the building principal or dean. The appeal must be made within five school days of the ninth student's absence.

Internet Access or Power Outage Issues

Students who are unable to access Indiana Online Academy due to internet or power outages are expected to have an alternative plan to complete their coursework at a public location with internet access (e.g., a public library). Students will not be permitted to use district facilities during outages.

If the student is unable to attend, please complete the Indiana Online Academy Attendance Notification Form, which requires the student’s name, date(s) of absence, and reason for the absence.
