Mrs. Roberts’ Introduction to Agriculture class recently wrapped up an engaging unit on floriculture. Throughout the unit, students explored the significance of floriculture and learned how greenhouses are used to grow a wide variety of plants and vegetable crops. A key focus of the unit centered on the cut flower market, including how to properly prepare, arrange, and care for flower arrangements.

To put their new knowledge into practice, students created their own fresh flower bud vase arrangements. The results were stunning! As a reward for their creativity and hard work, the class took a special trip to The Waters of Rushville to deliver their arrangements to residents. In addition to the flowers, students also crafted handmade cards to brighten the day of those they visited.

The visit was a heartwarming success. Students spent time engaging with residents—sharing stories, laughter, and even gathering life advice. Mrs. Roberts designed this capstone project not only to showcase her students’ learning but also to demonstrate the powerful impact of community service. It was a beautiful reminder of the joy that a simple gesture can bring to others.

This meaningful lesson was designed by Jenna Lawler, a senior at RCHS and the cadet teacher currently working alongside Mrs. Roberts. Jenna is also a proud member of the Rushville FFA Chapter. Her lesson will be submitted as part of her Agricultural Education Proficiency for the National FFA Convention competition.

A special thank you goes to Jennifer Vogel of Vogel’s Florist for her incredible generosity. Jennifer donated all the flowers, supplies, and materials needed for the students’ bud vases. Her support made this educational and impactful experience possible, both in and beyond the classroom.

The memories made during the visit to The Waters of Rushville are sure to stay with the students and residents alike for a long time.
